Cancelling basic health insurance: deadlines
Once you have received the new premium, you can terminate your compulsory basic health insurance with one month’s notice, effective at the end of the year. This applies to all plans and excesses – including GP, HMO and Telmed plans. The notice of termination must be received by the health insurance provider by 30 November 2026.
With the standard excess of CHF 300 and under the standard plan, it is also possible to switch providers at the end of June. In this case, the notice of termination must be received by 31 March.
Your current health insurance provider may only terminate your cover once your new insurer has confirmed that you are insured without any gap in cover. You should therefore apply for your new basic health insurance either before or at the same time as you give notice of termination.
Supplementary insurance: different rules
Supplementary insurance policies, such as semi-private hospital cover or dental insurance, are optional. The notice period is set out in your contract terms and conditions. As the new insurer may refuse to cover you, you should only cancel your existing supplementary insurance once the new policy has been confirmed in writing. Basic and supplementary insurance may be held with different health insurance providers.

Frequently Asked Questions
By when do I need to cancel my health insurance for 2027?
Notice of termination of basic health insurance must reach your health insurance provider by 30 November 2026 at the latest. The date of receipt by the insurer is decisive, not the postmark.
Until when can I switch health insurance providers?
To switch your basic health insurance with effect from 1 January 2027, your notice of termination must be received by your current health insurance provider by 30 November 2026. With the standard plan and a CHF 300 excess, it is also possible to switch at the end of June, provided notice is given by 31 March.
How do I switch my basic health insurance?
Compare premiums, apply for basic health insurance with the new health insurance provider and cancel your current basic health insurance. The notice of cancellation must be received in good time and in a verifiable manner – most reliably by registered post or A-Post Plus.
Does the 30 November deadline also apply to supplementary insurance?
No. Supplementary insurance policies are governed by the Insurance Contracts Act. The notice period is specified in your policy terms and conditions and is often three months, i.e. until the end of September. In the event of a premium increase, you generally have a right to terminate the policy early.
Can the new health insurance provider refuse to accept me?
Not under basic health insurance. Every health insurer must accept you, regardless of your age or state of health. In the case of supplementary insurance, the insurer may reject applications – therefore, do not cancel these until your new supplementary insurance has been confirmed.
What happens if the notice of termination arrives too late?
In that case, you will remain with your current health insurance provider for another year. Registered or traceable post provides proof of when your letter was delivered.
Do I need to give a reason for the cancellation?
No. You do not need to give a reason. The important details are your name, address, insurance number, the desired termination date and your signature.
